Leadership, Oaths and Accountability

Congratulations to the newly elected and reelected members to the Board of Selectmen. The following is the oath of office that each must take prior to serving and to which each must adhere to keep faith with the people of Billerica, the town of Billerica and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. All citizens should keep this oath in mind as they witness Selectmen (and all government officials in leadership positions) perform their duties in order to judge that performance and fitness to continue serving the good people of Billerica:

I ______________________ do solemnly swear that I will faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all of the duties incumbent upon me as a member of the Board of Selectmen for the town of Billerica, Massachusetts in accordance with the Bylaws of the town, the terms of the Town Charter and the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and that I will uphold and defend the Constitutions of the United States of America and the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, so help me God.

I have linked all of the referred to documents that must be understood, obeyed and enforced by each selectman in accordance with his or her oath of office above in underlined italics. But what is not discussed is what happens when a selectman violates his or her oath? What guidance, process or procedure is there for those who wish to seek remediation from being wronged? When I find specific documentation on this topic, I will replace this paragraph with a reference(s) to such guidance, process or procedure.

It is critical to remember that if Billerica truly wants to end the dysfunction that has hurt the reputation of our town, its economic and livability potentials that we must hold each member of our leadership team to this oath of office without exception.
