TODAY IN U.S. SUBMARINE HISTORY – JANUARY 26 BROUGHT TO YOU AS A COURTESY BY CHIEF OF THE BOAT (LINKS) and THE SUB REPORT.
The video below demonstrates clearly the danger of transferring crew members [or sick/injured patients] at sea. Initially, the transfer went well. You can then hear the collision alarm and the officer of the deck calling for “right full rudder” to help clear the tug. The tug got hung up on the stern planes [below the water] and you can hear the shouts for the tug to “get off of the stern planes”]. Apparently the stern planes ripped open the tugs hull and down she went.
For those wondering why sailors and marines are given ladder climbing drills to perform as part of basic training – now you know. It’s not easy climbing out of the water onto a round hulled ship. I’ll do some digging and try to find the inquiry and its results, but in the meanwhile, this is just one of the many day to day jobs our troops perform in which they put themselves in harm’s way for our benefit. Don’t forget to thank those you know and especially those you see in uniform.
