The preceding is certainly not the most civil of discussions, but it does serve to illustrate just how slanted the press has become in recent years. The demonstrated bias on the part of Chris Matthews in favor for the liberal view is so clear that it is indisputable. The same kind of “dialogue” can be found on shows such as “Hannity” where the social conservative agenda is pushed to the point of making any attempt at a rational discussion on the subject meaningless. If you are wondering why many people turn away from politics and political campaigns until the last minute, this may serve as a good visual to explain the nations apathy, cynicism and lack of understanding regarding the issues prior to pulling a lever for a candidate or a ballot question.
One of the main and most important functions of a free press is to keep the public well informed about the issues confronting them and the nation and helping them sort through the debris of slanted babble, self-promoting hubris and partisan disinformation. Instead, we find our newspapers, network news and news magazine sources filled with the same sort of evangelism, hogwash and audacious proselytism that they are supposed to be weeding out.
Chris Matthews made no attempt to define or to discuss facts with his guest. Mr. Matthews, in fact, left himself vulnerable to counterattack as a biased “journalist” due to an earlier sycophantic remark about how President Obama sent a thrill up his leg. As you can see, Mr. Matthews has learned nothing and remains as ineffectual as he has always been.
I don’t know about you, but I find it surreal that a politician seems to be spending more time trying to guide a journalist into asking relevant and proper questions and to think about answers in terms of meaningful facts than the other way around. Unfortunately, I think we are in for even more of this type of “reporting” and rancorous discussions between the press and members of government and the result is that we all will be the lesser for it.
