Question 1: Sales Tax on Alcoholic Beverages: This proposed law would remove the Massachusetts sales tax on alcoholic beverages and alcohol, where the sale of such beverages and alcohol or their importation into the state is already subject to a separate excise tax under state law. The proposed law would take effect on January 1, 2011.
This tax is ludicrous. We are already paying a sin tax (excise) for this legal (and therefore non-sinful) product. A second tax on a legal product is morally bankrupt and nothing less than legalized extortion or consumer citizens. If our economic woes continue and this is allowed to stand, what will stop them from imposing additional taxes on any product? The legislature and the Governor need to look to remove the amount needed from spending, not from consumption. To avoid this tax many people our shopping for alcohol products out of state and our consumer dollars for this product are benefitting our neighboring economies instead of our own. Liquor store owners are being hurt by this tax; especially in the northern section of the state where we border New Hampshire. This tax in order to continue spending philosophy is hurting small business and losing jobs. This tax needs to be eliminated now. Vote YES to eliminate this rediculous tax.
