First on the agenda is the report of a mailing in which Chelmsford Town Manager, Paul Cohen, was accused of not accepting land, at no cost to the town, offered to him by Eastern Bank behind the Center Fire Station. The letter allegedly accuses Mr. Cohen not only refusing the land, but also failing to notify the Board of Selectmen and the Community Preservation Committee of the offer.
Mr. Cohen denies the accusation of refusing “free land” by an Eastern Bank employee, and states that he was merely informed that Michael Eliopoulos was in discussion with Eastern Bank to purchase the property.
As usual, the Lowell Sun is lean on facts surrounding the bank employee’s identity, a statement from the bank itself regarding such an offer, or identification of the person or group behind the mailings. No effort, it seems, was made to fact check the story on any level.
This story is then followed up with a story on a proposed cellular telephone tower to be placed atop an existing water tower on Locke Road and how such a project would “affect too many residents”. My first thought was; affect how (as in good ways vs. bad ways)? My next thought was; how many people are too many? Thirdly, I wondered; affect in what way (specifics: elevated cancer rates, tinnitus, hearing voices…)? Again, this is an example of reporting that is all hat and no cattle (facts). It is alleged that Mr. Cohen, in defense of the BOS, claimed that the BOS had collected information based on constituent complaints, and were still gathering information on the project. He claims to have not endorsed this project and that he and the Board of Selectmen are not advocating for it. So, who is? Again, we have a case where meat was left off the table by the reporter.
A Chelmsford resident, reported to be Sean Sullivan, is alleged to have gone before the Zoning Board of Appeals and urged that body to “do the right thing for Chelmsford…and protect the people of the town who elected you.” Protect the citizens of Chelmsford from what? And does he mean by protecting “the people of the town who elected you” [sic], himself and his band of immediate neighbors; or all of the citizens of Chelmsford? Another unanswered but important question, don’t you think?
It seems Chelmsford has its share of Pit Bull villains, as does Billerica. In this case, however, no details were forthcoming in the article posted in the Lowell Sun regarding the nature and the severity of “complaints” filed against this renegade dog from hell! The owners asked for 2 weeks to find the dog a new home and the dog was granted a stay of whatever…In Billerica, bad doggy issues take 4 hours to decide with the Chairman of the Board of Selectmen doing all but plaster casting paw prints as evidence and hiring a special prosecutor to get a conviction.
And to think that this was the town that has potentially saved us from our own 40B debacle regarding
