The Commonwealth will release the finding of a review committee established to investigate the arrest of black professor and friend of President Barak Obama by a distinguished white Cambridge police Sergeant James Crowley. You can view the original arrest report listed on the “Smoking Gun” website.

I will read the committee’s report on its release, but I can’t help but wonder the worthiness of the time, energy and money put into this committee report. We’ve already had a beer summit that included two teachable moments: a calm and cooperative disposition during a police investigation, along with the using proper language helps resolve outstanding investigative issues with minimal delays, more so than does the opposite. The President, or any leader for that matter, serves himself best by waiting on and reviewing all the facts of a case before opening his mouth. This standard prevents wasting taxpayer money spent to gather the participants together for a beer and a public non-apologetic apology before sending the participants home, again, at taxpayer expense.

Some call this episode a good example of taking advantage of a teachable moment. I call it a willful suspension of common sense used to distract the public sufficiently to dampen their view on the original factors [an unreasonable reaction to a routine police investigation and the absolutely stupid and ignorant statement of the President of the United States]. In my opinion, this committee is nothing less than further, unnecessary taxpayer expense and diversion of public resources away from more pressing issues. Are we supposed to believe that this kind of money and attention would be expended were Professor Gates, instead, Mr. Homeless Jones?
