I know this teacher has been disciplined, but the question remains: When was the last time that you saw a video, or read a news report, about something like this occurring in a private school; such as within the Montessori system? If the answer is never, don’t you feel the urge to discover why not? How many other children do you suppose are watching this dust up as time alloted to educating them passes by. Will they have to make up that time at the end of the year? Nah, lost time due to child abuse is less significant that lost time due to snow, ice, floods or other natural causes.
I have heard of schools that allow corporeal punishment of children for misbehavior or other forms of misadventures. However, I think this is a bit beyond the pale, don’t you? Furthermore, while I haven’t heard anything on this topic, don’t you think common sense would dictate that a social worker investigate this woman for similar behavior at home? hopefully, that is being done by legal authorities – beyond the already filed lawsuit, that is. I wonder what Rodney King thinks about this and why everyone can’t seem to get along? And just think, we get this for paying $8 – $11,000.00 per year/per student. What a bargain the public school monopoly is, eh?
On a serious note, some have put the blame for this incident on the child and are calling to bring back the ability of teacher’s ability to paddle. Can you imagine this person with a paddle in her hands? Another lawyer stated that the kid was wrong for having a cell phone that she is seen taking from the child. Why did he have a cell phone in class? I think the cell phone video taken by another student not involved in the beating provides the answer. Without the video, where would that child and others in her care be? She should be charged with felony assault and battery. If a town, city or state were to spend money on cameras, don’t you think it would be wise to put them up in classrooms and school corridors before extending them to streets and subway tunnels where police are readily available?
