For those out there who are sometimes confused in the interpretation of the phrase that “all men are created equal…” here is a demonstration as to why it is absurd to take the statement on face value. In fact, after thinking about this, I’m uncertain as to whether or not all men have been equally “endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. Do you suppose that after substituting this woman with a young man, that he’d get the kind of cheap labor she manages to draw in such abundance?

Certainly, each has the opportunity to convince others to help, but I think, in this case, the young woman has a definite edge in becoming more successful than the young man. It doesn’t take a lot to translate this rather debauched example of inherent inequality to other differences that keep everyone from a utopian equality. Differences in IQ, desire and persistence to succeed, self-discipline, moral awareness and adherence, and many other things distinguish one person from another; and, therefore, one’s level of equality from another.

The Constitution states, clearly to me, that each person has an equal opportunity to achieve success, but one has to work to get there. One must apply whatever talents and tools inherent in one’s character and ability toward any goal in order to achieve the highest level of success possible for that individual. One must also, in order to freely exercise these rights, be free from immoral obstruction and infringement by others; and to guarantee such, one must guarantee that one will respect the rights of others as equals, with the right to freely travel their chosen path. To assure the promise is kept, government was created to be an impartial arbiter of rules making and adjudication.

Aside from providing a protective force to repel attacks (as opposed to preempting assumed attacks) and safeguarding citizens from domestic tyranny by lawbreakers and amoral politicians, government serves to protect citizens through a variety of public safety mechanisms such as police, fire and the national guard. Other than that, government had no other powers except those granted by the states, generally in the form of a Constitutional amendment. In America, the individual has been held supreme and it is this approach that had enabled our nation to grow and to succeed as quickly as it did when compared to the civilizations of Europe, Asia and Africa.

Humans are distinguished by more than fingerprints. They are also distinguished by their brains, their level of perception or cognition and they unique way they respond to the reality of the world around them. No two people have the same fingerprint and no two people think and act alike. What makes America unique is its recognition that in spite of our inherent differences, we all have an equal right to full take part in the world and to a path of achievement minimally impeded by government and non-conforming individuals. We recognize and cheer those who use their minds and other attributes in a way that leads to success. This case is no exception; although, I think we’ll all agree that it is not very commonly used. Perhaps, because it is not long lasting or profitable, it is best that this sort of problem solving is not in the top ten ways to conquer the world – or, is it?

Ladies! How many men can you count who pass by without an upward glance? Sometimes, one can truly say that all things are created equal; but, only sometimes…
