Dear Voters,

I am writing to inform the voters of Billerica that I am a candidate for the Billerica School Committee in the upcoming Town elections. I have lived in Billerica for more than 35 years and attended Billerica Public Schools. My daughter Rebecca is in the eighth grade at the Marshall School, the same middle school I attended.

I believe that being involved and giving back to our community is extremely important. I am involved in several civic organizations such as the Yankee Doodle Homecoming Committee and the Billerica Twinning Group, which is the group that promotes the relationship with our friends from Billericay England. I’m involved in town government as a Town Meeting representative and as a member of the Board of Health. I am currently a parent representative on the Marshall School Council. I have served on School Councils, starting at the Hajjar when my daughter enrolled in kindergarten. I have attended many School Committee meetings over the last several years. I’ve been the driving force to get the meetings on television by volunteering to record the meetings and edit them for broadcast on Billerica Access Television (BATV).

You may have seen me at the PopWarner Football Games, or at the ice rink known as Rebecca’s mom, or as the News Editor of Billerica.Org. These are roles I take very seriously. I also take my role as a taxpayer of Billerica seriously and will safeguard the spending of your money as well while on the School Committee.

This is a very important time for our school system. Mr. Antonelli has announced his retirement. And long term School Committee member, Maureen Collins Rea has decided not to run this year. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank them for their years of quality service to the town.

Our schools are changing, our children are changing and more importantly our spending needs to change. As a school system, Billerica needs to move forward by adjusting our priorities from time to time. We need to prepare our children for what ever path they choose.

I am mindful that costs continue to rise both in the households of Billerica and in the school system. I will work to ensure that the administration is held accountable for responsible spending of our tax dollars, while maintaining the quality education for ALL our children.

Our schools inside and out, as well as the equipment the students are using, are aging. I will work to ensure that the administration develops and maintains a plan for the maintenance of our school buildings as well as a replacement schedule for books, technology and other “disposable” supplies.

For more information about my candidacy please visit website at www.SandraGiroux.com or send me an e-mail at Sandra@SandraGiroux.com. I look forward to hearing from you; your support is greatly appreciated. Please feel free to forward this message to other, again I would love to hear from each and every one of you.

Election Day is Saturday April 10, 2010 from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. I respectfully ask for one of your two votes and I would be honored to serve the interests of ALL of Billerica’s public school students.

Sincerely,

Sandra Giroux
Candidate for Billerica School Committee

About Sandra:

My name is Sandra Giroux and I’m a candidate for the Billerica School Committee. I’m very excited about this opportunity.

My husband, Ed and I grew up in Billerica. I attended Billerica Public Schools and we have chosen to raise our family here. Our daughter is in the 8th grade at the Marshall Middle School, the same school I attended. I work locally as a Billing Manager for a health services company. I also work as a writer/editor for Billerica.org.

As a family, we know that giving back to our community is extremely important. I am involved in several civic organizations including Yankee Doodle, the Billerica Twinning Group. I serve on the Board of Health and in Town Meeting. I’ve also served on the Parent Council at the Hajjar and currently at the Marshall.

For several years, I have attended School Committee meetings and recorded them for broadcast on Billerica Access Television (BATV). As a result, I am extremely familiar with meeting topics and will ask the tough questions. After all I seek to represent you, the parent and taxpayer.

Experience:

Town Meeting Representative for over 9 years.
Member of the Board of Health for over 10 years.
Member of the Yankee Doodle Homecoming Committee.
Member of the Billerica Twinning Group.
Served on the Town Manager Screening Committee (2008).
Served on the General By-Law review Committee (2005).
Currently a Parent Representative on the Marhsall School Council.
Past Parent Representative on the Hajjar School Council.

Taxpayer
Proud parent of a Billerica student.

Thank you for your time and for stopping by. I respectfully ask for one of your two votes for Billerica School Committee on Saturday April 10, 2010.

To find out about specific issues, visit Sandra’s website here. I particularly like her recognizing the importance of preserving and protecting existing infrastructure and being proactive with the budget to avoid any more “surprises” with funding or with a here-to-fore non-existent vision and voice regarding the condition of school buildings and their preservation needs.

I have had issues with what I perceive to be a slowness toward being proactive regarding the Board of Health, but all in all, I think Sandra will make a great addition to the School Committee and will advocate for her election. Let’s Get Political In Billerica endorses Sandra Giroux for a seat on the School Committee in the upcoming election.
