It will be 8 years this September 11th (2009) since the World Trade Center atrocity commited by Al Qaeda islamofascists took the lives of just under 3,000 people, including children and infants. During this period a lot has changed in the world.

We have not caught and brought to justice the two key leaders of Al Qaeda, Osama Bin-Laden or Ayman al-Zawahiri, but Sadam Hussein was deposed and we’ve been fighting controversial wars on two fronts in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The country soon became polarized over the wars, especially after the fiasco created by “faulty intelligence” on Saddam Hussein’s “weapons of mass destruction” program.

The key here is the common acceptance that the United States intelligence agencies had fallen down and were not preforming to the standards expected. On the one hand, our government thought Iraq possessed weapons that it did not (although Saddam claimed to have them in an effort to keep Iran at bay). Obviously, intelligence regarding Osama Bin Laden, Al Qaeda and the Taliban was lacking to the point where no one say the September 11, 2009 attack coming, even though, following a previous attack on the WTC, a pledge was made to continue attacks on American soil.

Now, we have Attorney General Eric Holder threatening criminal investigations into those same intelligence agencies, and in particular, the Central Intelligence Agency. Some clain this agency was so horrifically weakened by the Clinton Administration that they could not properly function and were forced to work, many cases, in the dark. The activities by the AG threatens to restore those weaknesses and blind spots in intelligence gathering at best and placing the homeland at true risk at worst. Who in their proper mind would want to risk their liberty and their lives in general by volunteering to be an interrogator? There is no way that handing this matter in this manner can do anything by harm the overall security of the nation and her people.

The AG is supposed to function as an independent agency, but can be held in check by president Obama should he choose that option. His relative silence and inaction on this matter is tantamount to his sanctioning it. President Obama and Mr. Holder seem to agree with the U.N. position that officials may have broke the law and are, in fact, war criminals for acting in the best interests of the United States. I think it is critical for all Americans, democrat, republican and others alike to remember that we’ve not been attacked since September 11, 2009.

Do we want our intelligence agencies to return to working blindly? Do we want to risk another war over “faulty intelligence?” Do we want to give groups like Al Qaeda another shot at striking our homeland and killing more innocent non-combatants? So we really want to be subjects of the United Nations in place of participants with a major voice in international affairs?

If we don’t, then, I would simply ask you to remember the past – the attack of September 11, 2001 and the following 8 years of relatively safety at home. Keep these facts foremost in mind and decide if we really want to return to pre 9/11 day and intelligence status quo, or if we want to remain in the ever vigilant state of study and readiness of post 9/11.

Also remember that you each hold a vote; so, ultimately the true responsibility for whatever happens rests with you.
