The Billerica Minuteman reports that Selectman Marc Lombardo has raised the issue of the constitutionality of managing volunteers asking politicans found to be soliciting votes or volunteers during the Yankee Doodle weekend to leave. (http://www.lowellsun.com/ci_12678347 ) It has been a long standing tradition that the Yankee Doodle weekend remain non-partisian and inclusive by keeping political talk at bay.
In light of the 1st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, this is a complex scenario to lay out which group has which rights or not. It seems to me that a politician would have enough intelligence to not go where they aren’t wanted; especially if they are seeking re-election. However, if one group of politicians are allowed to linger before being asked to leave, and the same courtesy is not granted to an opposing group, then I think there are legal issues to be considered; especially, if the organization is also receiving government support or using public facilities or spaces.
